About me.

Most importantly, I'm a mother to three young daughters who are students in Topeka Public Schools. But even before motherhood, education was my passion. I was a long-time middle school teacher in all kinds of settings and all kinds of content areas before transitioning in my career, and I earned a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction in 2016. What I know from teaching and from my own research is that schools transform lives. Positive learning environments build confidence and provide invaluable opportunities.

Why me.

Every child deserves a quality education, and every child wants to learn. But it's impossible for any of us to learn if our basic needs aren't met. Topeka Public Schools provides for children and families as people first, working to meet individuals' basic needs, and that's why serving USD 501 is important to me.

In 2024, I was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Topeka Public Schools Board of Education. In the first year of my service, it has been a joy to learn about all the ways USD 501 serves its students and families even beyond the classroom: enrichment opportunities, meals, healthcare, extracurricular activities, school carnivals and family nights, food and clothing drives, community events, and countless social services. Our teachers don't just teach. They provide love, empower their kids, and fill gaps.

As a former teacher, I know how hard the job is. The people who become teachers do so because they love children and are motivated by purpose. They genuinely want to make a difference, and that's their most prized compensation. But our society has its priorities backward. Teachers should be recognized for the life-changing work they do, respected for showing up each day to care for our most prized resource, and adequately compensated for the important jobs they do day in and day out. My purpose as a school board member is to advocate for and support what's best for our students; and what's best for our students is that our schools are filled with highly-qualified, compassionate, and dedicated teachers and staff.
